Most of us have played the waiting game with our health — hoping that headache fades, that cough clears up on its own, that the pain is "probably nothing." Sometimes rest is the right call. But other times, waiting costs you.

Here are five signs our physicians say you should not ignore.

1. A fever above 103°F that won't break

A mild fever is your immune system doing its job. But once it climbs above 103°F — especially if it has lasted more than two days or is accompanied by a stiff neck, severe headache, or rash — you need a physician, not a thermometer check. High persistent fevers can signal bacterial infections, urinary tract infections, or more serious conditions that require prescription treatment.

2. Chest tightness or shortness of breath

Chest tightness is never something to sleep off. While it can sometimes be anxiety or acid reflux, it can also be the early sign of a cardiac event, pulmonary embolism, or a severe asthma flare. If the tightness is accompanied by pain radiating to your arm or jaw, call 911 immediately. For milder but persistent chest tightness, a same-day telehealth visit lets a physician rule out serious causes quickly.

Warning

If you have chest pain with sweating, jaw pain, or left arm pain — call 911. Do not drive yourself to the ER.

3. A UTI that is getting worse, not better

Urinary tract infections are one of the most common reasons patients end up in urgent care — and one of the most avoidable ER visits. If you have burning with urination, pelvic pressure, or cloudy urine, a telehealth physician can evaluate your symptoms and send a prescription to your pharmacy the same day. Left untreated, UTIs can spread to the kidneys and become serious.

4. A rash you cannot explain

Rashes have dozens of causes — allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, viral infections like shingles, or Lyme disease. Some rashes are cosmetic inconveniences. Others, like a bull's-eye rash after a tick bite or hives spreading toward your throat, need same-day attention. A physician can assess photos of your rash through a video visit and determine the right course of treatment.

5. You have been sick for more than 10 days

A cold typically resolves in 7 to 10 days. If you are still congested, fatigued, or feverish after ten days, your body is telling you it cannot fight this alone. What started as a virus may have turned into a sinus infection, bronchitis, or pneumonia — all of which benefit from prescription treatment. Do not keep waiting for a turn that is not coming.
